San Francisco Giants @ San Diego Padres
In one of his final appearances for the Padres, Brian Meadows pitched a pretty decent ballgame. Unfortunately, Mark Gardner for the Giants was even better, shutting out the Padres for 7 innings while striking out eight. The Giants win 3-0 behind RBIs from Ellis Burks, J.T. Snow, and Doug Mirabelli. Joy got so cold at this game, that I had to buy her a Padres sweater. Now she's the ultimate fan.

Denver Broncos @ San Diego Chargers
Hey I love that ticket guarantee! The "CITY" you see on the ticket means this was one of the tickets the city of San Diego bought in order to make the game a sellout, thus ensuring this game would be on TV locally. Unfortunately, the 33-17 final score that favored the Broncos was not very ratings friendly. I went with Joy to this game, and we ended up leaving early in order to not be late for an appointing.

Florida Marlins @ San Diego Padres
Celebration 3,000! There was a pre-game celebration recognizing Tony Gwynn's 3,000th hit, which he achieved a few days earlier in Montreal. When Gwynn finally got to speak, the first thing he did was apologize to the Marlins for delaying the start of the game. It didn't seem to effect them though, because the Marlins beat the Padres 4-3. Padres starter Brian Boehringer left with an injury and would not pitch again until the 2000 season. Joy and I went to this game and sat in the front row behind center field.

Colorado Rockies @ San Diego Padres
Brian's birthday, and we went to a Padres game to celebrate! Matt Clement, making his second major league start, pitches almost 6 innings, allowing 1 run en route to his first major league victory. He did throw 2 wild pitches though. Trevor Hoffman notched his 51st save of the season. That's about it for this game.

Montreal Expos @ San Diego Padres
This was the 1998 NASSCO company game. They put on a huge tailgate party with all kinds of great food before the game started. Dustin Hermanson, the Expos starter, was facing the team that originally drafted him a few years earlier. He was apparently holding a big grudge against the Padres. Not only did he pitch almost 8 innings allowing only 1 run, but he also homered off Padres starter Sterling Hitchcock. Vladimir Guerrero also homered for the Expos in this 3-1 win over the Padres.

Anaheim Angels @ San Diego Padres
It was 1970's night at Qualcomm Stadium. The Angels and Padres both wore uniforms from 1978. The Padres looked great in their brown with yellow trim uniforms. Cecil Fielder crushed a towering 3-run homer off of Padres starter Kevin Brown, but those would be the only runs he allowed. The Padres got 6 runs off of Angels starter Jason Dickson, including a Ken Caminiti home run. A lot of fans dressed for the occasion, making this look more like a massive disco party than a major league baseball game.

Cincinnati Reds @ San Diego Padres
Wow, not much happened in this game on the field. The Padres won 6-3 behind a strong start from Andy Ashby. Greg Vaughn hit his first of 50 home runs that season, a Padres single-season record. To wrap things up, Trevor Hoffman notched his second save of 1998. We got the NASSCO seats for this game, but dad couldn't go. Our friend Mr. Bill Knight was in town, so he took me. The best part of the night was when I asked the camera guy below us to put us on the jumbotron. A few seconds later, there we were. I also remember on the way home, Bill's really crummy rental car could barely make it up the hill out of Mission Valley on the 163.

New Mexico Lobos @ San Diego State Aztecs
Yeah, I remember absolutely nothing about this game. I had to look up the score from a college football historical scores website. What did I learn? I learned that New Mexico won this game 36-21 over the Aztecs. SDSU went on to finish the season with a 5-7 record. The Lobos played in the WAC Championship game, and the Insight Bowl, but lost them both. At least the ticket stub correctly identifies the stadium as Qualcomm Stadium.

Philadelphia Phillies @ San Diego Padres
Sterling Hitchcock makes his first start as a San Diego Padre and throws a 1-hitter through 8 innings. Trevor Hoffman pitches the ninth, doesn't allow a hit, and picks up his first save of 1997. This becomes another Padres no-hitter close call, were it not for a Rico Brogna RBI double in the 5th. The ticket stub from this game says Qualcomm Stadium, yet future 1997 ticket stubs still say Jack Murphy Stadium.
