Paul Byrd hurled a fine complete game shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the San Diego Padres 8 to 0 at Petco Park.

Byrd(1-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the San Diego offense. He
didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. St. Louis had 10
hits for the night.

Livan Hernandez(4-7) was tagged with the loss. He allowed St. Louis 6 runs in
5 innings of work.
