One run was the difference at Petco Park as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated
the San Diego Padres 4 to 3.

Pittsburgh tallied 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning when they had 3 base
hits. The key at-bat was by Brian Giles who helped quiet the crowd when he
tripled bringing in two baserunners. San Diego threatened in the 9th but
Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.

Curt Schilling(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings.
Schilling got relief help from Dan Wheeler who gained credit for his 1st
save. Rudy Seanez(4-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He surrendered
3 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.
