WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Gil Meche robbed Paul Konerko of a base hit.
Juan Uribe hit a grand slam and Livan Hernandez pitched 9 strong innings as
the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 6 to 1.
Uribe provided much of the offense. He slapped a one-base hit plating a run
in the 2nd inning and hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates
(his 5th of the season) in the 3rd inning. San Diego had only 5 hits for the
night.
Hernandez(5-7), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Gil
Meche(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 5 hits and 4
walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.
'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Hernandez. 'I had
good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything
went well.'
